Weekly Strings-Progress Report

First up: I finished my Vertices Unite by Stephen West and it is way better than I ever imagined it could be!!! Thank you to all my color advisors!!

Rundown of yarn used:

  • Madeline Tosh Merino Light; Calligraphy, Modern Fair Isle and Edison Bulb
  • Malabrigo Sock; Indiecita
  • Isager Alpaca 2; Dark Grey
  • The Lemonade Shop Simple Sock; Mega Toxic Stuffed Oreo
  • Yarn Yarn Co MCN Twist; PINK

I loved the construction. It was different and kind of unexpected. I knew what was coming next but it was fun to see the different shapes and color changes. Also i-cord borders, gets me every single time. While knitting I'm thinking how long it's taking, how much I hate it, how I just want to wear my shawl but then when it's finished...it's perfection. So clean and tidy. Forever a hater and lover of i-cord borders.

I have also restarted my Sizzle Pop shawl three times. Once to switch colors and twice because I have yet to learn how to come back from a brioche error. I am still using the Hedgehog Fibres Monarch but now I am also using Yarn Yarn Co's Pink (the same from my Vertices Unite-because it's that good). And now that I see it in photos I am questioning the pink BUT I think I'm being too particular. I'm going to roll with it and see what happens...

I am also currently working on shop example with Lang Yarns Amira. It is a cotton/nylon blend and the yarn is SOOOOOOO soft. Like butter. It's unreal. I'm making the Dafne tank/vest. I just started like an hour ago so I'll have a picture update next week.

Other exciting things...the weather!!! It is beyond gorgeous. Grab your knitting and enjoy it while it lasts.

Weekly (Monthly) Strings

Sorry for the silence but here are all the exciting things that have been happening!!!

Since my last post I have started the Vertices Unite Shawl by Stephen West and have made some pretty decent progress. I am using all the yarns. The pink is Yarn Yarn Co (which is hand-dyed here in DSM!!), it's striped with Madeline TML Calligraphy, some random stash gray, Malabrigo Sock #416 Indiecita and the speckles is Lemonade Shop in the Mega Stuffed Toxic Oreo colorway. This shawl has been super fun to knit with and pretty brainless which is also a bonus.

I also have started the Sizzle Pop Shawl which is a brioche masterpiece. I don't like the colors so it has currently been frogged while I search for something with a higher contrast.

Also super lady Arin just finished her first adult sweater in Cascade Eco Wool. When she's not knitting she can be found around town with her band, Karen Meat. Great job, Arin!!!! And the sentiment is mutual.

March KAL-Update

As March was winding down so was our shawl KAL. Group photos to come but I finished my Freshwater Shawl just in the knick of time. Like March 30th in the knick of time and I blocked it in April. Close enough...right?

Pattern: Freshwater Shawl by Andrea Mowry and Annie Rowden

Yarn: Madeline Tosh Merino Light in Modern Fair Isle and Geyser Pool

Verdict: Loved it!!! Great concept with one designer writing the first half of the pattern and the other designer writing the second half. Fun to knit. Make sure you read ALL the directions.

Weekly Strings

This week has been super exciting!!! We received our first shipment of Hedgehog Fibres and welcomed some new sewers into the world!!!

Look at those beautiful hand dyed skeins all the way from Ireland. I can't wait to cast on for the Sizzle Pop Triangular Shawl that was released this week.  Just looking at this picture I am thinking it has to be the two skeins in the bottom left, the purple and the peach. Let's talk about that super intense brioche though...eek! I think I can do it. I think I can do it. I think I can do it.

And we completed our first EVER sewing class at HVK!!!! It was taught by Kim the super talented mastermind and wonderful creative lady behind JBird Stitch. Kim sells her oven mitts, project bags and zippered pouches at the shop and at various shows around Iowa!!! With her help students cut out and sewed a tote bag from a pattern, added an inner pocket, liner and even made their own straps!!! Excellent work ladies and Kim!!!

happy weekend!!!

March Shawl-a-thon!!!

We are currently in the middle of a March Shawl-a-thon/KAL. No rules just a little extra motivation to either complete that long standing shawl you are working on or just an excuse to cast-on something new!!! There is still time to join!!

We have people working on the Freshwater Shawl, the Keswick Shawl, the Dewberry Shawl, the First Note Shawl, the Amadovier Shawl and the Lilli Pilli Shawl. I can't wait to see them all!!

I am knitting the Freshwater Shawl which is a new collaborative pattern by Andrea Mowry and Annie Rowden. I am using Madeline Tosh Merino Light in the Modern Fair Isle and Geyser Pool colorways and although I was afraid it was a little too country with a k in the beginning I am really starting to like it!

Hello and Welcome!!

Welcome to the HVK blog! Jess and I (Erica) plan to share all the crazy things that we are currently knitting on/dreaming of starting/scheming up/drooling over on the internet and probably some cat photos. Realistically it will probably break down to 50% cat photos and 50% general rambling about knitting.

A quick introduction from me (Erica). I grew up west of Des Moines and now currently live in Des Moines with my boyfriend, Ian and our three cats. When I am not at HVK or knitting I can be found crafting something, reading or exploring outdoors.

Here is my most current knitting helper, Mabel
